Siobahn Morse, executive director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses Dexedrine and its addiction and abuse.

What are the effects of Dexedrine?

Dexedrine is a stimulant drug that is available in tablet or sustained released capsule form and generally prescribed to treat narcolepsy or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD.

Dexedrine is a central nervous system stimulant. Exactly how it works is not known. It affects certain chemicals in the brain which may help to improve attention span and behavior.

What is Dexedrine addiction and abuse?

As a respiratory and cerebral stimulant, Dexedrine can cause intense mental and physical stimulation.

The intoxication effect includes: increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism, feelings of exhilaration, energy and increased mental alertness. Users will often stay awake for many hours even with a low dosage.

What are the side effects of Dexedrine?

As a stimulant, this drug has high abuse potential. The stimulant effect may give way to a let-down period of depression and fatigue.

Although the let down can be relieved by taking another dose, this soon becomes a vicious cycle.

If Dexedrine is habitually taken at doses higher than recommended, or if taken over a long period of time, the user may eventually become dependent on the drug and suffer from withdrawal symptoms when it is not available.

What are the side effects of Dexedrine?

Agitation, irritability, dry mouth, headache, nausea, anorexia, weight loss, hallucinations, heart palpitations, ticks and sexual difficulties are all side effects of Dexedrine.

What are the withdrawal symptoms of Dexedrine?

Withdrawal symptoms from Dexedrine include craving, exhaustion, confusion, psychotic reactions, intense hunger, drowsiness, irritability, increased sleeping, disturbed sleep and violence.
