Lexapro is in a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, also known as SSRIs.

SSRIs work by supporting the availability of serotonin. Serotonin is a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance and a feeling of well-being.

What is Lexapro addiction and abuse?

Even though Lexapro is not considered addictive, SSRIs and anti-depressants do have an associated risk of withdrawal syndrome.

Another important consideration in taking any medication is the possibility of developing a psychological addiction.

A psychological addiction is the belief that one can not function normally without the daily or more frequent use of the medication.
