Darvon Addiction and Abuse

Siobahn Morse, the executive director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses Darvon addiction and abuse.

What is Darvon?

Darvon is a narcotic medication that is approved for treating mild to moderate pain in adults.

Rather than working directly at the site of the pain, Darvon works in the brain and the spinal cord.

This is not typically a first-choice pain reliever as it is considered a weak narcotic.

What are the effects of Darvon?

Darvon is an opioid medication and can cause feelings of euphoria, making it attractive to some people who use it recreationally.

The product produces central nervous system depression.

Darvon belongs to a drug class known as narcotic analgesics also known as opioid analgesics. Drugs in the class relieve pain by affecting how the brain perceives or senses pain.

What is Darvon addiction and abuse?

Darvon is only slightly more effective than taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. However, the drug is an opioid narcotic meaning that a user can develop a tolerance to the drug.

When a tolerance is built, Darvon users develop a stronger craving and take a higher dose than prescribed. This creates a dependency for the drug or an addition.

Darvon was named by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency as one of the country’s top ten abused drugs.

What are the side effects of Darvon?

Constipation, stomach pain, rash, difficulty urinating, difficulty breathing, mood changes, dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness, upset stomach and vomiting are side effects of Darvon.

What are the withdrawal symptoms of Darvon?

Withdrawal symptoms of Darvon include anxiety, sweating, insomnia, shivering, pain, nausea, runny nose, diarrhea, goose bumps and cravings.
