Signs and Symptoms of Prescription Drug Abuse

Opioid Abuse

Opioids are commonly abused prescription drugs.

• These include:
• Oxycontin
• Vicodin
• Other painkillers

The signs and symptoms of opioid drug abuse include:

• constipation
• depression, or a depressed affect
• low blood pressure
• confusion
• drowsiness
• complaining of being tired or even an inability to stay awake.

Abuse of Stimulants

Stimulants are another form of prescription drug that can be abused.

These include:

• Ritalin
• Adderall
• other prescriptions used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD.

The signs and symptoms of stimulant abuse include:

• weight loss
• agitation
• irritability
• insomnia
• high blood pressure
• irregular heart rate

Abuse of Sedatives and Tranquilizers

Sedatives, tranquilizers and sleep aids may also be abused. These include:

• Valium
• Ativan
• Xanax
• Ambien
• other drugs

The signs and symptoms of abusing sedative, tranquilizers or sleep aids include:

• drowsiness
• poor judgment
• confusion
• unsteady gait or walk
• rapid or involuntary eye movements
