What Is Percodan Detox?

Siobahn Morse, the executive director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses detox from Percodan.

What is Percodan?

Percodan contains a combination of aspirin and oxycodone. Aspirin is in a group of drugs called salicylates.

It works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain, fever, and inflammation.

Oxycodone is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers.

Percodan is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

What are the effects of Percodan?

Like heroin, morphine and other opioid drugs, Percodan works by binding to the body’s opiate receptors, highly concentrated areas of the brain that control pain and emotions.

When opiate drugs bind to these receptors, they can drive up dopamine levels in the brain’s reward areas, producing a state of euphoria and relaxation.

What is Percodan addiction and abuse?

Percodan abuse could include altering the Percodan dose by taking more than needed or for unintended reasons and/or repeated, chronic use despite potential negative consequences.

Potentially addictive drugs such as Percodan activate the brain’s reward and pleasure centers.

This stimulation could cause patients to chase the rewarding feelings causing them to crave the drug more and more.

Powerful psychological and physiological cravings are indicative of a drug dependency.

Other signs of Percodan abuse and addiction include a mental preoccupation with obtaining and consuming the drug. Others may falsify prescriptions or shop around for different doctors to secure more than one supply.

What is a substance medical detox?

Drug detoxification is used to reduce or relieve withdrawal symptoms while helping the addicted individual adjust to living without drug use.

Drug detox is not meant to treat addiction, but rather as an early step in long-term treatment.

Detoxification may be achieved drug free or may use medications as an aspect of treatment.

Often drug detox and treatment will occur in a community program that lasts several months and takes place in a residential rather than medical center.

Drug detoxification varies depending on the location of treatment, but most detox centers provide treatment to avoid the symptoms of physical withdrawals to alcohol and other drugs. Most also incorporate counseling and therapy during detox to help with the consequences of withdrawal.
