Fentanyl Withdrawal and Fentanyl Detox

Siobhan Morse, the executive director of The National Institute for Holistic Addiction Studies discusses Fentanyl Withdrawal and Detox in this Special Report.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic, opiate analgesic similar to, but more potent than morphine. It is typically used to treat patients with severe pain or to manage pain after surgery.

It is also sometimes used to treat people with chronic pain who are physically tolerant to opiates. It is a schedule II prescription drug.

What is Fentanyl withdrawal?

Regular use of Fentanyl will produce physical dependency in a few weeks, and this can lead to severe withdrawal if use is suddenly stopped.

After discontinuing Fentanyl, it takes 17 hours or more for a 50% decrease in serum concentrations.

What are Fentanyl withdrawal symptoms?

Because the patient can develop both a physical and psychological addiction to this powerful opioid, Fentanyl withdrawal can affect people in a number of ways.

Symptoms of Fentanyl withdrawal can include: abdominal pain, anxiety, confusion, irritability, insomnia, night sweats, rapid breathing, and flu-like symptoms.

Those who have used the stronger doses of Fentanyl for longer periods of time as well as those who have developed a high tolerance to pain medication will experience the most severe Fentanyl withdrawal.

What is Fentanyl detox?

Due to the fact that Fentanyl is only prescribed for long-term sever pain problems, patients must taper down slowly under a knowledgeable physicians care or enter a detox center for 24/7 treatment.
