Concerta Addiction and Abuse

Siobahn Morse, the executive director of The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies, discusses Concerta addiction and abuse.

What is Concerta?

Concerta is a prescription drug that was specifically manufactured to help people who are suffering from attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), who lack the ability to focus, and hence require medication to increase their ability to concentrate.

It may also be prescribed for narcolepsy, treatment resistant cases of lethargy, depression, obesity, and obsessive/compulsive disorder (OCD).

What are the effects of Concerta?

If this drug is used as directed by a medical doctor, it has few or no side effects.

However, when it obtained illegally and abused by recreational users, its improper use can lead to dependence and eventually addiction.

What is Concerta addiction and abuse?

Concerta has a high potential for drug abuse and drug dependence due to its pharmacological similarities to cocaine and amphetamine.

The main abusers of Concerta are teenagers and young adults, particularly those in colleges and universities who use this drug as a study aide.

They may introduce this drug into their bodies through injection, snorting, or smoking.

Abusers often crush the tablet before using the powder. Some will mix it with cocaine and snort it while others smoke it together with illicit substances such as marijuana.

There are also others who mix the powder with water and then inject into the body.

What are the side effects of Concerta?

In high doses for an extended period of time the user may experience paranoia, schizophrenia, and psychosis.

Psychosis symptoms include hearing voices, visual hallucinations, urges to harm the self or others, severe anxiety, euphoria, grandiosity, paranoid delusions, confusion and increased aggression.

What are the withdrawal symptoms of Concerta?

The withdrawal symptoms of Concerta include tiredness, panic attacks, psychosis, irritability, crankiness, extreme hunger, depression and nightmares.
